ART 273 | GRAPHIC DESIGN FOUNDATIONS

3 CREDITS. PREREQUISITES ART 114.

This course is an introduction to the art, language, theory, and practice of graphic design. Students will have an introductory knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign by the end of the semester. This class integrates the use of typography and imagery in compositions, explores the conceptual design process, teaches communication through presentation and critique, instills high quality craftsmanship, and introduces production methods used in graphic design.


ART 480 | ADVANCED GRAPHIC DESIGN

3 CREDITS. REPEATABLE. PREREQUISITES ART 112, 114, 130, 273.

Study and application of abstract representation in graphic design. Design methods and genres are examined during the production of promotional material including identity and business systems and campaigns. Ability to work metaphorically with image and design will be stressed. Focus will be on layout and composition. Continuing students will focus on application of graphic design principles to environmental and three-dimensional material including packaging, showroom graphics, display and electronic media applications. Appropriate art safety instruction will be included.


ART 382 | TYPOGRAPHY

3 CREDITS. PREREQUISITES ART 112, 114, 130.

The study and application of type. Examination of historical and contemporary typographic perspectives, including study of the structure and expressive nature of type as an integral element of graphic design.


ART 491 | TYPOGRAPHY: EDITORIAL DESIGN

3 CREDITS

Students will focus on the study of typography and composition in graphic design. Students will understand different types of binding methods and be knowledgeable in the printing and production practices of graphic design.

ART 491 | NEW ART MEDIA: WEB DEVELOPMENT

3 CREDITS

Art and design are vital elements in creating accessible and successful websites. New Art Media uses graphic design principles and site design tools to assist students in producing interactive, dynamic, and visually imaginative Internet compositions.


This course will teach the language, structure, and practice of web design for artists, introducing students to alternative approaches in web design through presentation and critique. The rich history of designers and artists who have used the web as a medium in various ways will also be explored.


This course is an introduction to the language, structure, software, and practice of web design. It integrates the use of web safe fonts, optimized imagery, interface design, responsive web design, HTML, CSS, and an introductory knowledge of Javascript.


ART 481 | GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNSHIP

3 CREDITS. PREREQUISITES ART 114, 273, 480.

Senior standing and instructor consent. Supervised work experience in graphic design. Plan submitted by student and approved in advance by faculty and on-site supervisor. Final report, portfolio of work produced during internship, and employee evaluation required.
